Virgil van Dijk plays down talk of new Liverpool deal
Virgil van Dijk insists he is“not discussing anything in the moment“ seeing negotiations over a contract expansion at Liverpool.
The Reds defender opened to Sky Sports News reporter Bryan Swanson following Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat away to Napoli.
It turned out to be a gloomy start particularly with all the Van Dijk allowing Fernando Llorente to steal a late second aim.
On the back of reports earlier in September that he’d agreed a bumper deal at Anfield, the 28-year-old, who transferred into Anfield from Southampton for #75m in January 2018, was asked if he wished to hold talks.
„There is nothing happening, so that is it,“ he explained.
Asked again about needing to hold discussions about’any extension‘,“ Van Dijk added:“That’s not on me! I found some reports I was agreeing things and a new deal.
„But I am not even discussing anything right now. The one thing I want to do right now is to focus on the matches and we’re going to find in the long run what may occur.“
Van Dijk has been at the core of the ascent of Liverpool beneath Jurgen Klopp, playing a leading role at the route of the club last year and their development as Manchester City’s main competitors for Premier League dominance.
Liverpool have made a perfect start by winning their first five Premier League games, however they face their greatest challenge so far when they travel to face Frank Lampard’s Chelsea on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.
