Lewis Hamilton ‚unlucky‘ in Italian GP pole position near-miss
Lewis Hamilton thinks that he was“quite unlucky“ not to pip Charles Leclerc to GP post – but states he is enjoying the“exciting“ duel using Ferrari in Monza.
Together with the final laps of Q3 destroyed by the farcical battle to get a tow around F1’s fastest lap, the struggle for rod was ultimately settled by the very first Q3 runs – that Leclerc gained from Mercedes‘ Hamilton with a mere 0.036s and Valtteri Bottas by 0.047s.
But Bottas and also Hamilton reckon pole could have been theirs had they not had to lift when KimI Raikkonen crashed at the Parabolica before them. When it spun off hamilton was supporting the Alfa Romeo.
„I had been very unfortunate,“ Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. „I was behind Kimi for the very first lap. I probably started so I caught him, the lap near. With a car you need to produce a gap for the tow.

„I began catching him throughout the corners and I was thinking’don’t catch him too much‘ and I got to the last corner and he summoned, and so I had to lift. With that lift I would have lost half a tenth and it might have bene the difference between rod and instant.
Nevertheless, the championship leader stated:“But that’s exiting. I really like that it is that close and it’s not multiple tenths.“
Leclerc vs Hamilton in comparison
In side-by-side SkyPad analysis of Leclerc and also Hamilton’s laps, Anthony Davidson reveals how the Mercedes was fractionally ahead of Ferrari starting the backstraight which heads to the Parabolica – then was still level pegging leaving the final turn despite inevitably having to ease off for Raikkonen.
From the video over, Sky F1’s Davidson says:“Raikkonen spins out ahead and Lewis surely must back out of that ever so slightly.
„On the departure, despite a vehicle spinning facing him clearly having to flip out, the excess speed the Mercedes inherently has beneath it if it moves via a high-speed corner is enough to maintain him pretty level pegging with the Ferrari.
„Unfortunately for him, onto this [pit] right, just at the end that is what made the difference.“
Meanwhile, Leclerc stated he had not been pleased.
„Mercedes were fast, we had been very fast also,“ that the Ferrari driver stated.
„My lap was not special. I was far too near Hulkenberg. In the corners I had been shedding a lot, although the slipstream was obviously amazing. It was not perfect, but I was too close.“
Hamilton and Bottas begin between the two Ferraris on Sunday’s grid along with the Englishman said:“I am really happy we enhanced the automobile by bit on the weekend and also was able to get very near the Ferraris which is awesome.“
