Ex-Manchester City winger Rabbi Matondo aims to emulate Jadon Sancho in Bundesliga
Wales winger Rabbi Matondo believes he could imitate Jadon Sancho and create a huge impression in the Bundesliga.
Matondo followed England teenager Sancho, who has scored 16 goals in 55 appearances for Borussia Dortmund since he moved in swapping the Premier League for Germany when he combined Schalke in an #11m movement in January.
The 19-year-old scored his very first Schalke goal at RB Leipzig in the 3-1 success before he was invited into Ryan Giggs Wales squad for the upcoming European Qualifiers against Slovakia and Croatia.
It is only one goal and it is just my very first start of the season, said Matondo.
But I can get a lot more moments this year and bring about goals and assists and assist the team climb the table.
When I can do as well as he (Sancho) has done so far then I will be really pleased.
He is an excellent player. I have always understood that. Hopefully he can help me.
Jadon did not make me move to Germany, but naturally he is doing this well there and if it came about I thoughtwhy not?
It was not that I couldnt see a pathway (at City), I think in myself. Obviously at Manchester City it is tough – of the players are players.
But it was that I had the opportunity to play and go first-team soccer and at the time I did not have that in Manchester City.
So I preferred to play with first-team football, and so I took the chance.
Half a year younger than Sancho, matondo, never made a appearance at City and just turned 19.
The winger, who was once labelled the quickest participant at City after beating the likes of Kyle Walker, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling in rate tests, has just made two starts for Schalke.
However he insists his profession is heading in the ideal direction under the advice of former Huddersfield head coach David Wagner.
I have still got a lot to improve and find out but Im happy with how things are going, explained Matondo, that currently includes three Wales caps prior to making his debut last November.
Hopefully there will be many more minutes for Schalke this season and hopefully thatll inspire me to perform more for Wales.
When I was younger I always believed in myself. I thought: you will be playing in a good level when you are 17, 18, 19.
That is what I am doing at the moment. We will find (about the future), but I will give it my all
